Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling

/ Medical & Surgical Gynaecology / Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling

Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling (LOD) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to induce ovulation in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) who do not respond to medications.

How It Works:

  • Small holes are made in the ovaries using a laser or electrocautery.
  • This reduces male hormone (androgen) levels.
  • Helps restore normal ovulation and menstrual cycles.

Indications:

  • Women with PCOS who do not ovulate naturally.
  • Resistance to ovulation-inducing medications (e.g., clomiphene).

Advantages:

  • Minimally invasive with small cuts.
  • Shorter recovery time compared to open surgery.
  • May help in natural conception.
  • Regulates hormones and menstrual cycles.

Risks & Considerations:

  • Risk of internal scarring (adhesions).
  • May not be effective for all women.
  • Can affect ovarian reserve if overdone.

Laparoscopic ovarian drilling can be a helpful fertility treatment option for selected PCOS patients when other treatments fail. Always consult a qualified gynecologist or fertility expert.
